Think any other cool discoveries will come of this? Maybe some hidden data rooms floating around somewhere might be fun. :)

Developed by Grasshopper Manufacture – Published by EA – Version played : XBox 360

When I had first heard that Suda 51 (Killer 7, No More Heroes) was going to be making a game with Shinji Mikami (Devil May Cry, God Hand), I couldn’t contain myself.  It was a duo that I had loved from the moment I heard of it’s inception, and when I found out later that Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill, Neo Contra) was going to be working on the soundtrack, I didn’t even know what to do.  This was going to be a dream team, everything I could ask for in a game…right?

Fast forward to a few years later, the game is released, a few scant trailers had come and gone, and I had almost forgotten about it until a month beforehand.  It wasn’t due to the fact that I wasn’t happy for this game to exist, but due to an almost non-existant Advertising campaign courtesy of an apparently apathetic EA, I had to force myself to remember that this game was here.

Review: Alleyway

Posted on June 13th, 2011 by Sack

Back when I was a wee man, growing up, I was gifted a Game Boy by my parents for Christmas.  At the time, there wasn’t a huge selection of games out, and being around 8 years old, I also was not one to be able to go and buy any of my own, so I was at the mercy of my parents to be able to provide me with new games.  There was one I ended up getting that was like an arcade classic I had enjoyed playing, and that was Alleyway. Keep trying, Microsoft. I love the Kinect, but that doesn’t mean you can just paste a giant franchise on it and it will be good!

Review: Juanita vs. Castlevania

Posted on June 10th, 2011 by Juanita

Castlevania has been floating around the gaming world for nearly 25 years, that’s how long I’ve been in existence, about 2 weeks ago our paths crossed, Juanita and Simon Belmont finally meet. I know you’re probably saying to yourself, “How could this be?” I do have to admit that I wasn’t completely oblivious of it’s presence, we had a NES growing up and my brother played many of the classics, but I knew to never get in between a boy and his Nintendo so I never really got that much game play, and truthfully, if it wasn’t Super Mario Bros. or Kirby I wasn’t interested. So, when Jon asked if I would be interested in playing Castlevania and sharing my thoughts on the game, I was up to the challenge! Read more »

GA E3: Impressions of Mario Kart 3DS.

Posted on June 9th, 2011 by Sack

This was a hot one.  I’m a big fan of the series as a whole, and Mario Kart 3D was one I’d been quite looking forward to.  Imagine my face when I found out it was being co-developed by Retro!  It looked a lot like Wario’s right after he had stuck his hand in some poop and found golden coins.  Yup, almost exactly.  But enough about caca-covered currency, you probably want to know why this Mario Kart is different.  Let’s find out. GA E3: Impressions of Super Mario 3D.

Posted on June 9th, 2011 by Sack

What a day. I spent a large chunk of it examining the goodies that lay in wait for us later this year with some super hot 3DS games. Truth be told, I enjoyed pretty much every last game I tried. The only two I DIDN’T do were Excitebike 3D, because it’s out (and I still can’t connect to a competent WiFi hotspot to get it), and the 3D Pokedex, for the exact same reason.

But, what I DID do is get the chance to sink my teeth into some really gnarly gems that got me all hot and bothered for the 3D goodness to come.  This lineup was solid. We will tackle this in the order that I played the games in.  Read more »

Dan here.  Two things you should know about me.  Number 1, I am a GIANT Final Fantasy fan.  Some might even call me a fanboy of the series.  And Number 2, I really do not care for Final Fantasy XIII at all.  In fact, it is one of my least favorite of the the entire series!  Because of this, it should come as no surprise that I was pretty disappointed when Square-Enix announced a direct sequel to XIII, and thought it would be the first Final Fantasy game I didn’t buy on release day in a long time!  Thankfully, after actually playing the game today, I am happy to say that it seems like Square-Enix learned from the complaints that I, and many others, had with XIII and looked to fix them!

Before I address say anything else about this game, I just want to say, HOLY CRAP, this game looks AMAZING graphically.  Squaresoft has always been known to push systems graphically, and XIII-2 looks to continue the trend.  In fact, no matter how I felt about the original XIII, I did think it was one of the best looking games I have ever played, and this game manages to look even better. Video after the jump. Read more »

GARetro E3: Impressions of Wii U part 1

Posted on June 8th, 2011 by Sack

When Nintendo’s press conference this morning choppily made it’s way to my iPhone, I was beyond excited.  In fact, BEYOND that, even.  We all knew it was going to happen, but not in what capacity or what direction Nintendo was going to take.  The name, the capabilities, and all other details were left to the imagination, formulated only from what industry hints had been floating around.

But when I was gracious escorted to a closed area with the system available for play, the first thing that happened was I got to have my mind blown. Nintendo stressed that nothing there was final game form, but a myriad of demos released to make us glow with wonder and see what COULD be. Read more »

GARetro E3: Impressions of Kirby Wii

Posted on June 8th, 2011 by Sack

The first thing I did when I walked into the West Hall of LA’s Convention Center was head to the Nintendo booth, naturally. Upon arrival, I saw that it was super duper crowded and Wii stations were set up everywhere. While Dan looked around, I ended up seeing Kirby Wii in a row consoles. Having only seen a brief trailer about half a year ago, I decided to check it out.

Like any Kirby game, the name is simplicity, and that’s the nature of the control in this one. The remote was held sideways, for a standard side scroller, and it ended up being a beautiful, colorful, and well animated game that truly brought Kirby to life the way we’d all imagined. Read more »
